Nicaragua - “El derecho a caminar” - Creation of an ortho-prosthetic center in Matagalpa
SwissLimbs reaches Central America with a new rehabilitation project in Nicaragua.
The project aims at strengthening the Nicaragua health system to increase the presence of innovative and professional rehabilitation centers and increase physical rehabilitation services to amputees and disabled persons in urban and rural areas in Nicaragua.

The 3 existing orthopedic workshops are just not sufficient to address the increasing needs of a population of over 6,5 million people. The Ministry of Health of Nicaragua has a plan to cover the northern and central part of the Country through the construction of new orthopedic centers.

The Nicaraguan Ministry of Health has identified the city of Matagalpa, in the northwest of the country, as a priority location to launch the first phase of the project to strengthen the national rehabilitation system with the refurbishing and equipping of an old rehabilitation center that is currently in disuse.

Phase I of this project will focus on:
  • Rehabilitating and equipping an orthopedic workshop in the city of Matagalpa in existing spaces within the local hospital.
  • Providing training to local orthopedic technicians, to teach advanced and low-cost rehabilitation techniques.
  • Supplying the workshop with the materials needed to produce orthoses and prostheses and assistive devices.

The project in Nicaragua will be SwissLimbs' first in Central America and can count on a strong local partner for its implementation. For this project in Nicaragua, SwissLimbs will collaborate with AMCA – Associazione per l’aiuto medico al Centro America, a Swiss-Italian NGO active in the medical field and present in Nicaragua since 1985. AMCA is an accredited and well-known NGO in Nicaragua, a country with which it has an excellent connection thanks to the relationship with the Ministry of Health and the expatriate staff working locally.
