Rwanda - Support to Rehabilitation in Rwanda
To address the problem of the tragic shortage of orthopedic rehabilitation services, SwissLimbs aims to strengthen the Rwandan health system by increasing the presence of innovative and professional centers and state-of-the-art services.
The Rwanda Society of Prosthetists and Orthotists - RSPO estimates that in Rwanda there are currently more than one million people in need of rehabilitation; however, throughout the country there are only 12 functioning orthopedic centers, most of which are old, with outdated equipment and lacking even the basic materials for the manufacture of orthotics and prostheses.

To address the problem related to the tragic shortage of orthopedic rehabilitation services, infrastructure and specialized training, SwissLimbs aims to strengthen the Rwandan healthcare system by increasing the presence of innovative and professional rehabilitation centers and state-of-the-art services for amputees and disabled people residing in urban and rural areas of Rwanda.

The project includes:
▪ The training of local orthopedic technicians.
▪ The creation of a complete orthopedic workshop, equipped with the necessary machinery for the fabrication of prostheses and orthotics;
▪ The procurement of prosthetic and orthotic materials and walking devices for the three years of the project;
▪ The purchase of a mobile clinic equipped with orthopedics for the identification and provision of services to persons with disabilities who cannot independently travel to the workshop and who live in remote and rural areas.

Two trainings for orthopedic technicians have already been organized in 2021, during which 11 orthopedic technicians were trained and the mobility of 10 patients was rehabilitated.
