"I never walk without my leg". Alex Sandy Cuumber, 32 years old from Bo, Sierra Leone.
Alex is 32 years old and comes from Bo, the second largest city in Sierra Leone, in the
southern province.
In 1996, during the civil war that deeply affected the country, Alex
was playing football with his friends, when he began to hear shots in the distance.
The shots got closer and closer and, seized by fear, he started running away. While
he was running, he was hit by a bullet and, as soon as he arrived at the hospital, the
doctors decided to amputate his right leg above the knee.
He has had a prosthesis
since 2007 but it is old and heavy, so he is very excited that he was able to get a new
one from SwissLimbs. Alex is ashamed to walk without his prosthesis and tries to
never use crutches so as not to feel observed by people. Unfortunately, the disability
influences his life a lot and he says he always tries not to argue with other people
otherwise they start to make him feel uncomfortable about his situation and tell him
that it is his fault that now he has no longer a leg.
